Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer or Gastric cancer is cancer that develops in the lining of the stomach. It is amongst the fifth leading most commonly diagnosed types of cancer and the third leading cause of death across the world. And is usually observed more in men than in women.

Types of Stomach Cancer

Listed below are the different types of stomach cancer:

  • Adenocarcinoma Stomach Cancer: This cancer cell invades the gland cells in the inner lining of the stomach.

  • Lymphoma or Gastric Lymphoma: Cancer that develops in the lymphatic system and immune system cells of the digestive system, which includes the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and oesophagus. Lymphoma is categorized into primary and secondary types:

  • Primary Lymphoma: It includes the stomach and can eventually impact bone marrow, lymph nodes, and other body parts.

  • Secondary Lymphoma: At first it spreads to other parts of the body like the circulation of blood, bone marrow, and other organs. Afterward, it spreads in the stomach.

  • Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GISTs): A most common type of stomach cancer that begins in the gastrointestinal tract.

  • Neuroendocrine Stomach Cancer: A rare type of stomach cancer that invades the neuroendocrine cells of the stomach.

Locally Advanced Stomach Cancer

Cancer has spread to tissue surrounding the stomach and has not spread to other body parts.

Advanced Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer begins in the stomach and spread to any one part of the body like the lungs or liver.

Symptoms Of Advanced Stomach Cancer

People diagnosed at this stage might experience the following symptoms:

  • Digestion-related problems

  • Weakness

  • Vomiting

  • Unusual Weight Loss

  • Pain in the stomach

  • Poop that looks black

  • Burning sensation in the heart

Treatment

Based on how much cancer has spread, your doctor might recommend the following options:

Surgery:

  • Endoscopic Surgery: Fortunately, if stomach cancer is diagnosed at an early stage; i.e. cancer cells have spread to the limited area inside the lining of the stomach then with the help of endoscopic mucosal resection it can be removed.

  • Gastrectomy: Once the tumour spreads outside your stomach, with the help of gastrectomy it can be treated. And it includes two types of gastrectomy:

  • Subtotal Gastrectomy: In this surgery, only the cancer-affected area of the stomach is removed.

  • Total Gastrectomy: In this surgery, the whole stomach along with some surrounding tissue is removed. And oesophagus is then directly connected to the small intestine so that you can easily eat after total gastrectomy.

Other treatments include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy which can be either used alone or can be used in combination to treat stomach or gastric cancer.
